Goodyear Receives Outstanding Cultural Awareness Program Award for Juneteenth Family Day Event

The city of Goodyear's Parks and Recreation Department has been honored with a prestigious award from the Arizona Parks and Recreation Association (APRA). APRA awards celebrate excellence across the state, honoring communities that excel in long-term planning, resource management, and innovative delivery of exceptional park and recreation services, all while maintaining fiscally responsible practices.

The city of Goodyear was awarded with the APRA Outstanding Cultural Awareness Program award for its 2023 Juneteenth Family Day event. The award highlights the city's commitment to celebrating diversity and fostering community connections.

"I'm so proud of everyone involved in the Juneteenth Family Day event,” said Parks and Recreation Director Nathan Torres. "We couldn't have done it without the amazing work and dedication of our Volunteer Planning Committee and the Goodyear Arts and Culture Commission."

The Juneteenth Family Day event is a vibrant celebration of freedom, culture and unity. Each year the event features a diverse lineup of musical and dance performances, engaging educational sessions and a variety of food options from local black-owned vendors. The first city-hosted Juneteenth event was in 2022.
