The city of Goodyear’s Digital Communications Department has been honored with a prestigious Silver Circle Savvy Award from the City-County Communications & Marketing Association (3CMA) for its innovative and highly successful live stream of the total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024. This national award recognizes excellence in strategic communication efforts that enhance public engagement.
The 2024 solar eclipse, a rare astronomical event, captivated the nation as it passed over parts of North America, generating significant public interest. Goodyear seized this opportunity to engage and educate its residents by live streaming the eclipse from Civic Square Park. Using advanced technology, including a high-powered telescope with a specialized solar filter, the team captured and live streamed a crystal-clear image of the eclipse in real time via the city’s Facebook and YouTube platforms.
The live stream featured multiple interactive elements designed to maximize the viewer experience, including live commentary from city staff, educational content provided by NASA and real-time weather updates from the National Weather Service. The use of split-screen technology allowed the audience to simultaneously view the eclipse's path across the U.S., along with engaging on-the-ground footage of attendees at the park.
