September 2020 Update - There's still time to be counted! 

Census employees are now conducting door-to-door follow up with non-responsive households but residents can still respond online at http://www.2020census.gov/ or by phone at 844-330-2020 (English) or 844-468-2020 (Español) to “avoid the knock”.

Please remind your friends, family, neighbors and other stakeholders that their participation in the census is critical. Every resident counted represents over $3,000 in funding annually for critical services in our community like education, healthcare, senior services, parks and recreation, transportation, and public safety.

Our Goodyear Complete Count Committee

Goodyear has launched a Complete Count Committee (CCC). This group of Goodyear residents is working to inform fellow neighbors about the upcoming Census. They are from geographically diverse communities; Palm Valley and PebbleCreek in the north, to Canyon Trails, Estrella Vista and historic areas in the heart of town, and up the hill to Estrella and CantaMia in southern Goodyear. You will see us around in our bright yellow vests.

• plan and implement a public education campaign to promote timely Census responses
• represent your neighborhood in activating and engaging residents around the importance of a complete count
• ensure all of your neighbors are counted

On March 6 2020, the Goodyear Complete Count Committee (CCC) held its first Topics on the Move (T.O.M.) neighborhood census engagement event at the Goodyear Village Center. The intent of these events is to bring Census information out into the community. As opposed to citizens having to travel to where government events are held, the committee meets residents in the communities where they live, shop, thrive and gather together.

The Goodyear Village Center is a large multi-tenant shopping center anchored by discount and thrift retailers including Goodwill, DD’s Discounts (Ross) and a future Dollar Tree. This center was strategically chosen as it sits just northwest of Historic Goodyear, an area which might be susceptible to an undercount per Census data.

The committee engaged with residents from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. The 75 degree weather was perfect as was evident by the continuous flow of traffic and people patronizing the Village Center businesses. During the committee’s visit, approximately 170 Census reminder keychains were given out and over 200 people were greeted to discuss the upcoming Census. People of all ages, abilities, genders, lifestyles, languages, states of origin and counties of origin were engaged during the 4 hour event.

CCC member Ashley, spoke with our Spanish speaking community members and was able to provide additional clarity and information in their primary language. During the event, one of our Spanish speaking community members was confused about the Census and the Primary election; since she is not a citizen she cannot vote and thus though the Census didn’t apply to her. Ashley was able to clarify the confusion and assure the resident that even though she is not a citizen she is welcome to and encouraged to participate in the 2020 Census starting next week.

CCC Lead Christian was told, by a Canadian citizen, that the Census doesn’t apply to her. He was able to clarify that Canadians here in the United States on April 1 do in fact take the Census!

The day was filled with fun conversations and opportunities to inform the community. The shopping center was perfect for this engagement opportunity.

Community Engagement 

 The committee attended the Estrella Annual Homeowners association meeting as well as an event at the CantaMia (at Estrella) Village Center. During the February CantaMia gathering, the committee engaged with 60+ residents.

Upcoming events include bringing the Topics On-the Move (TOM) van to neighborhood parks and commercial centers near you!

Starting in mid-March, you will be able to take the Census with CCC members utilizing internet connected iPads! If you need help, your CCC neighbors are her to assist you.

Heart and Sole 🏃‍♀️ (February 2020)

More than 840 runners participated in the Heart and Sole 5K 1 mile run and fun walk. Runners, families, friends, vendors and cheering squads visited the Complete Count Committee booth to learn more about the 2020 Census. Nearly a dozen resident stated they "hadn't heard about the upcoming Census." A powerful reminder of the importance of the CCC's work to impact Goodyear and ensure our fair share of federal and state dollars.

Getting Arizona Involved in Neighborhoods (GAIN)🏘️ (November 2019)

If your neighborhood participated in GAIN day events, you certainly met a Goodyear Complete Count committee member/ASU student who was eager to talk about efforts related to the upcoming Census.

Fall Festival 🎃 (October 2019)

During Fall Festival, which was themed "Harvest Meets Haunted", the Complete Count Committee hosted a booth in the Trick-or-Treat Village. Along with the 14 other booths, 250,000 pieces of candy were passed out to an audience of more than 7,000. While the candy booth was popular down on the field, other CCC members mingled up on the concourse, passed out key chains and brought awareness to the Census (as well as their festive costumes).

Star Spangled 4th  (July 2019)

During the Star Spangled 4th, members of your Complete Count Committee mingling with residents and visitors alike. They sported their new brightly colored committee vests and passed out custom "iCount 2020 Goodyear, AZ Count Me In!" key chains and Census 2020 pens. More than 300 key chains were passed out along with several dozen Census pens. Along with the chachkies came great conversations about the 2020 Census; committee members reached between 600-900 people at the Ballpark. 

Hop and Hops 🐰 (April 2019)

During the Hop and Hops event, members of the Complete Count Committee hosted their first 2020 Census engagement event. The committee set up a booth utilizing the Goodyear Topics on the Move (T.O.M.) van. The committee had census banners and information boards about the census. In order to build excitement, the committee had a jelly bean guessing contest. The number of jelly beans correlated to the amount of dollars, each person counted in the Census, brings in to the state and local community. The jelly beans were displayed inside of a decorative glass drink dispenser; the winner closest to the correct number won the jar and jellybeans. Between 260 – 340 people visited the Census booth; 87 people used iPads to submit their guess.

What about Canadians and other non-U.S. citizens?

• If a *Canadian citizen is living in Arizona on Census Day (April 1^st) they can and should complete the Census here in Arizona.
• Regardless of whether or not a Canadian citizen lives in the Unites States (US) for six (6) months, they should take the Census in the state that is their primary residence while they are living in the US.
  • That is to say, if they live in Arizona for four (4) months and then return to Canada for eight (8) months then they can still be counted in Arizona as this is where they live a majority of the time when they are in the US.
  • If they leave the US before Census Day but would still like to be counted, they can complete the Census online (starting in March 2020). 
• If a Canadian citizen splits their time between Arizona and another state before returning to Canada, then, whichever state they spend the most time in, while in the US, is where they should be counted.
  • That is to say, if they spend three (3) months in Arizona and two (2) months in Washington and then they return to Canada, their Arizona address is where they should be counted.  
• If a Canadian citizen splits their time between two (2) states equally, they should take the Census in the state they live in on Census Day.
  • That is to say, if they live in Arizona for three (3) months and in Washington state for three (3) months, but will be in Arizona on Census Day, they should be counted in Arizona.

Note:

• *All rules stated above are applicable to both Canadians, other non-US citizens and/or other foreign-born residents who spend time living here in the United States.
• The Census is confidential and not shared for law enforcement purposes.
• Information about particular individuals cannot be released for 72 years.
