Emergency Situations & Disasters
Expand/Contract Questions and Answers
Goodyear Fire, Police and other departments will respond to emergencies and disasters in a coordinated fashion; however, every household should have an emergency plan and basic preparations done well in advance.
- Be prepared to stay – This means keeping ample basic supplies of food and water in your home should you be required to shelter in place for a time. We recommend at least one gallon of water per person per day.
- Be ready to go – Have a go bag full of items that you might need in case asked to evacuate with little or no notice. Don’t forget what your pet might need, too!
- Be prepared to communicate – One of the most valuable things you can do in an emergency is to maintain the ability to receive emergency instructions and communicate with your family.

Safety & Training

A smoke alarm will beep or “chirp” once every minute or so when the battery is low. Although your smoke alarms may be hardwired into your home’s electrical system, it should have a battery back-up in case of a power failure. Smoke alarms should be tested monthly and batteries changed once a year or according to the manufactures recommendations. If the smoke alarms are hard wired, they probably are interconnected to each other. If this is the case, when one alarm sounds they all sound, this helps to notify everyone in the home to get out of the house quickly.
It is a common occurrence for smoke alarms to sound when the weather allows doors and windows to be open or when turning on the heater for the first time each winter season. Dust and other fine particles that resemble smoke activates the sensors and cause the alarm to sound. Once you determine there is not a fire and your alarms continue to sound, shut off the breaker. Great time to vacuum alarms and press the test button on each alarm.
Your smoke alarm(s) should be replaced every 10 years, this includes hardwired alarms too. Like most electrical devices, smoke alarm sensors wear out.
For assistance with your alarms, please call a licensed handyman or electrician.
