Citizens' Police Academy

The Goodyear Police Department’s Citizens’ Police Academy is a free program designed for residents of Goodyear and provides an inside look at their police department and law enforcement operations. The Citizens’ Police Academy is designed to provide participants with an understanding of the operations and resources of the Goodyear Police Department. Participants will interact with police command staff, veteran officers and professional staff members during the academy.  The goal of the Citizens’ Police Academy is to provide a greater awareness and understanding of law enforcement’s role in our community.

The Citizens’ Police Academy is NOT the police recruit academy. Please visit the careers section or the city of Goodyear Human Resources Division if you are interested in applying to be a police recruit.

  • Police department overview
  • Gangs
  • Drugs
  • Robbery/Homicide
  • Sex Crimes
  • Forensics
  • DUI
  • Traffic Laws
  • Tactical Operations - S.W.A.T
  •  K9 Unit
  • Training Unit
  • Police Communications - Dispatch
  • Human Trafficking/Sex Trafficking
  • School Violence
  • Volunteer Opportunities

Eligibility Requirements: Potential candidates for the Citizens' Police Academy must meet the following criteria:

  • 18 years of age at time of application
  • Reside in the city of Goodyear
  • No prior felony arrests
  • No misdemeanor arrests within 5 years of application
  • Each applicant will have a background check conducted by the police department

The Goodyear Police Department reserves the right to deny applications and acceptance to any applicant.

Graduation Standards: 

  • No more than 2 absences
  • One 5 -hour ride-along with a Goodyear Police Officer
  • One 4-hour shift observing in Dispatch
  • Adhere to the informational goals established for the academy

When are classes offered?

The Department offers two academies per year with a max of 25 people in each Citizens' Police Academy class. 

Days and Times: Tuesday and Thursday Evenings in the Spring and Fall of each year.

Location: Goodyear Police Operations Building, 11 N. 145th Ave. Goodyear, AZ 85338.
