What Does it Take to be a Goodyear SWAT Officer?
The testing and training processes are rigorous, with a goal of keeping Goodyear residents safe.
Becoming a police officer takes a lot of things: discipline, patience, intelligence and so much more -- not to mention the physical aspects of the position.
Becoming a member of a SWAT team takes even more -- a level of mental and physical endurance achieved by only a select few.
"You have to be able to respond to a variety of situations -- some of the most dangerous things that we face as a police officer," said Goodyear Deputy Police Chief David Farrow, who heads up the Field Operations Bureau, which includes the Goodyear SWAT team.
"The SWAT team responds to the incidents that go beyond the typical capabilities of patrol. We're dealing with the most serious of offenders and the most serious crimes."
The city is always updating its training process to ensure its team is the best it can possibly be.
"The testing process is difficult. It's all-encompassing, and that's by design," Farrow said. "We put them through rigorous physical fitness training, increased firearms standards, written tests, judgment scenarios, and an oral board. We really want to find out what they can bring to the table."
Goodyear's SWAT team has to be ready for the most dangerous situations that may take place. Its top goal is to protect those it is sworn to serve.
"The No. 1 priority of this team is the safety of the community and our residents," Farrow said.
